A RETROSPECTION OF MALAYALAM DEPARTMENT

S.T. HINDU COLLEGE

NAGERCOIL


            The Department of Malayalam, S.T. Hindu College, started functioning in the year 1952. Degree Courses with Malayalam as one of the first languages started in the year 1954. There was only one member on the faculty in the first year. The strength of the faculty, however, rose to three in 1961, and subsequently to four in the year 1963. The delinking of Pre University course form Colleges resulted in a fall of the strength to three. In 1975 the Head of the Department, Late. K.G. Unnikrishnan Nair, was designated Professor, and he was in service till 1987. Since 1980 the department continues to be headed by only one member.

          The Department has had the unique privilege of enjoying the services of the following learned professors.



1.   Prof. Bhaskaran Nair (1952 to 1953)                        

2.   Dr. B.C. Balakrishnan,(1953 to 1959) who later   retired        as Editor and Head, Dept. of Malayalam Lexicon, University of Kerala, Trivandrum.

3. Prof. T.Easwara Chandran(1954 to 1958 )

4. Dr. K. Appukuttan Nair (1958 to 1959), who later retired as Head of the Department of Malayalam, Univ. of Kerala, Trivandrum.

5. Prof. K.G. Unnikrishnan Nair (1958 to 1987)

6.Dr. V.R. Prabhodhachandran Nair (1959 to 1963 ), who later retired as Prof. and Head of the Department of Linguistics, University of Kerala, Trivandrum and later officiated as Chairman of Kerala Kalamandalam, Thrissur.

7.Prof. Dr. P. Somasekharan Nair (1963 to 1966), who later retired as Editor and Head, Dept. of Malayalam Lexicon, Univ. of Kerala, Trivandrum.

8. Prof.  R.Gopalakrishna Pillai (1966 to 1967 )

9. Prof. K.S. Sambu Devan (1967 to 1968)

10. Prof. Omanakutty Amma (1966 to 1970 ),later retired as Professor in Malayalam,Univ.of Kerala,Trivandrum

11. Prof.K. Radhakrishnan (1969 to 1971 )

12. Prof. G. Nagendran Nair, joined in1972 and retired in 1990.



In addition, renowned literary luminaries have made periodical visits to the department to have interaction with the staff and students. They include Jnanapeedam Award winners G. Sankarakurup (Poet), and Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai (Novelist); Padmasree Award Thickkurrichi Sukumaran Nair (actor); Mahakavi P. Kunjiraman Nair; Swami Gnanananda Saraswathy; renowned novelists, P. Kesava Dev and Perumpadavam Sreedharan; Shahitya Academy Award winners Vayalar Ramavarma (Poet); O.N.V. Kurup (Poet), Sugathakumari (Poetess), Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan (Poet), Mahakavi             M.P. Appan; illustrious academicians and critics. Prof. S. Gupthan Nair,                N.V. Krishna Warrior and Puthusseri Ramachandran; academician and playwright  Dr. Vayala Vasudevan Pillai; academician and critic Dr. Vellayani Arjunan; critic and poet R. Ramachandran Nair, I.A.S. who retired as Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Kerala; famous playwrights and actors like T.N. Gopinathan Nair and P.K. Venukuttan Nair; Academy Award winners for short story like C.V. Sree Raman and Dr. S.V. Venugopan Nair, Vaisakhan, Mundoor Krishnankutty and Neela Padmanabhan. Further, famous poet   S. Rameshan Nair, former student of S.T. Hindu College, Nagercoil, Chemmanam Chacko, D.Vinayachandran and Kurieepuzha Sreekumar; academicians Dr. K. Ramachandran Nair, who retired as Prof. and Head, Dept. of Malayalam, University of Kerala, and Dr. M. Sivadasan, Prof. and Head, Dept. of Malayalam, M.K. University, Madurai; famous musicians like Kamukara Purushothaman and M.G. Radhakrishnan; well-known drama actors like Nagavalli R.S. Kurup, T.P. Radhamoni; and the versatile film actor Ragavan have all graced the department with their august presence.

With a view to bringing out the latent potentials of youngsters, the students of first language have been consistently encouraged to participate in and win titles like “Kala Thilakam” instituted by Chaithanya Kala Vedhi which is a student wing of “Mithram”, an association of Malayalam – speaking minorities of Kanyakumari District.

 Priority areas of research and details of ongoing projects and publications


-         Priority Area of Research is Novel, Drama, Satire and Folklore

-         Completed one minor project on Comparative Study of Malayalam and Tamil Satirical Literature.

-         Muharam: A Folklorist Proof of Hindu Muslim Cultural confluence in the South Indian Folklorist Journal. No.7, 2004.

-         Kalippankulam: A Reality or Myth, accepted for publication.

Research Centre of Malayalam

                      The department has recognized as an research centre of Malayalam in September 2010 by M.S.University,Trirunelveli.Our centre is the one and only research centre in M.S.University area.The following students are doing  research under the supervision of Lt.Dr.K.R.Ajeendra Nath,Associate Professor & HOD of Malayalam.

            Since 2005 Faculty is giving training to students for placement in visual media as well as in print media. few students who were from STHC earned name and fame in Malayalam literature and Kerala cultural field.The name of the well known poet Mr.S.Ramesan Nair comes first.He translated THIRUKKURAL into Malayalam and it is considered as the best.Mr.T.N.Gopakumar of Suchindrum is a novelist and his main contribution is to electronic medium especially ASIANET.He is well known throughout Kerala and amoung Keralaites residing in foreign countries.Mr.R.K.Kumar is a senior editor in the leading Malayalam Daily “Mathrubhoomi”.Mr.Hemanda Kumar(First Rank Holder in Part-1 Malayalam) is serv ing as a Magistrate in Tamil Nadu.They brought credit to their institution.

Conclusion
